CHARACTER INFO
Name: Nephel Dromai
Gender: Female
Source: Homestuck OC
Canon point: Trying frantically keep to her hive from crashing and killing her.
Age: A little over seven sweeps, roughly equivalent to sixteen years old.
Colour: Vriska cerulean! Since fantroll and all, haha.
Chumhandle: benignZeppelin

History: This is the wiki article on Alternia, and this is the article on trolls and their culture.

Nephel in particular is a normal troll, albeit one with a rather unusual hive: it functions as a sort of blimp, staying afloat thanks to a complicated self-sustaining system of gears and pulleys. This system also makes it impossible to steer or land, leaving it at the mercy of the sky's air currents and leading Nephel to drift all over Alternia. She's never set foot on the ground, in fact only viewing it from thousands of feet up in the air.

Despite this handicap she still possesses a computer and access to Trollian, allowing her to make friends with four other trolls. Although these trolls sometimes clash with each other, it's never spilled over to the fevered pitch of something like the Team Charge debacle.

Basically her life is as unremarkable as a member of a bloodthirsty alien race raised by freaky white animals can be. At least until a storm damages her hive's delicate machinery irreparably and sends it hurtling towards the ground. Luckily this is when she receives her Sburb discs, otherwise that would have been pretty damn difficult to wriggle her way out of.

Personality: Nephel is a strange girl, even by troll standards. Having grown up virtually alone outside of the companionship of her lusus thanks to her hive's unusual location, she's socially awkward and anxious not to offend or scare off the people who speak with her. Even when conversing with friends she's had for some time her tone is hesitant and unsure, as she worries that one wrong opinion will send them running in the other direction permanently. Although she doesn't feel she's any good at socializing at all she's eager to make friends, having had enough solitude to last her a lifetime.

This solitude has made her very naive about the way troll society works - for a long stretch of time she was ignorant about basic things like the hemospectrum or geography of Alternia; even now her knowledge of such things are outdated, having only antiquated books to rely on for information. She's a voracious reader because of this, devouring any book that her psychic friend brings up to her. On the urging of her more caste-minded friends she tries to act the noble blueblood that she is, but her language during such attempts is stilted and obviously ripped from musty old novels. Nephel isn't particularly comfortable doing this but assumes that the trolls actually living in society know more about what's 'appropriate' than she does.

Another unfortunate trait (and one of her most prominent) brought on from the placement of her hive is a crippling fear of heights. After spending sweeps staring at the fathomless drop and watching items she's lost her grip on fade into tiny black dots, Nephel is utterly terrified of anything more than a few feet off the ground. She does her best to avoid situations that place her in high positions, but when confronted with a situation that requires her to do something such as make a jump she'll completely go to pieces, dissolving into hysterics. This fear is one of the few areas she doesn't attempt to improve upon, feeling so uncomfortable about the whole matter that she'd rather push it to the back of her mind and pretend it doesn't exist.

The upkeep of her hive has resulted in Nephel discovering a talent that she greatly enjoys - that of machinery. Unlike someone such as Equis, who builds intricate robots with delicate wiring inside and the ability to act on their own in a sophisticated manner, Nephel's dearth of resources as well as her own nature lends her to build small items that primarily function with clockwork. Her hive is littered with little windup toys that she's built out of worn parts from her hive's self-sustaining system, something which makes her feel accomplished and useful.

Although by nature she would rather avoid conflict, Nephel is far from defenseless. She owns a grappling hook gun (think Batman but a rifle instead of a handgun) that she uses to shoot down passing birds to supplement her diet with no small rate of success. Because she's spent much of her life alone she cherishes her friends dearly and is more than willing to turn her gun on anything that threatens them. Endangering the people she feels loyalty to is one of the few ways to get her to not only stand her ground but push at whatever it is that might harm them.

Even when not consumed by anxiety Nephel is rather horrible at reading people's feelings. Sweeps with nothing but an overexcitable lusus and the yellowed pages of her library to go off of have made it difficult for her to read the more subtle nuances of emotions. Quadrants escape her entirely, as does the more delicate forms of sarcasm. This leads her to occasionally making choices which could offend someone without realizing it, as she hasn't picked up on their silent signals in regard to whatever topic is at hand. Being mostly unaware of the problem in the first place leads her to simply fall back into the familiar cycle of profuse apologies and complete mortification.

For all her foibles and insecurities, however, Nephel is still an incredibly cheerful girl most of the time. A healthy sense of curiosity and appreciation for the small things other people might pass by (like real ground) make it easy for her to find the bright spot in most situations. She's hesitantly hopeful about her own life, believing that if she works hard enough she might someday not be as much of a failure to her species.

Abilities & physical limitations: Nephel is a troll, which means that she's a lot more durable than humans are. Aside from her keen marksmanship she's fairly agile, although the limited space she's lived in all her life means she isn't as strong as she could be. Otherwise she's an average troll, as those as high up the hemospectrum as she is don't tend to have supernatural powers.

There is also the crippling fear of heights. Force her into a situation where she'll have to confront it and she breaks down completely, unable to cope.
Appearance: > Nephel: Render yourself in a more symbolic manner. Replace the sky blue coloring of the symbol with cerulean, if you'd be so kind. This was made before I apped here.
Notable AU differences from canon, if applicable: n/a

Strife Specibus: Riflekind.
Prototyping: Her lusus, which basically looks like this except white.
Title: Spy of Dreams
In-game abilities: Her dreamself is capable of concealing itself from sight by others as well as able to travel to the opposing moon, ie if she were a Derse dreamer she would be able to skulk around on Prospit. She can also view the normal dreams of other people, but must be within a few feet of their sleeping body and can be thrown out of the dream if detected by its owner.

Yeah, that's all I've got right now. I'm not particularly good at this.

Planet: Land of Mercury and Bridges.

The entire planet is covered in massive painted canyons, with the cities of the consorts built into the walls Anasazi cliff dweller-style and wide rivers of mercury running through the canyons. Countless bridges (some also made of mercury) span the canyons and are the only way to cross to the other side outside of alchemizing flight gear.

The mercury rivers, however, are unnatural and not meant to be on the planet. Morpheus, LOMAB's denizen, transformed the waters of the world's waterways and caused all who drank the new liquid to fall into a deep and endless sleep. Consequently the only thing conscious on the planet besides Morpheus is the player as even the consorts (brick red tapirs) have fallen prey to the enchantment.

This is meant to help stimulate and develop the Hero of Dreams' ability (clues can be gleaned from looking into the tapirs' dreams) but a more cryptic method of finding the denizen and restoring the planet is available in the form of rock art scrawled on the walls of various canyons.

RP Sample: One sample hot off the test drive meme.
